Project: Hearts and Dalas Mittens

Well, here they are my State Fair mittens for 2015.
Hearts and Dalas Mittens
This was my first time knitting mittens with lace weight yarn and I’m pretty happy with the results. It’s funny, fingering yarn feels so thick now! I have no idea if I have a chance at a ribbon, I’m my own worse critic and after spending so long with these I see things that could be knit better. Finger-crossed this is my year.

I have written up the pattern and shared it here. These are for those who like tiny knitting with a gauge of 15 stitches and 17 rows per inch on size 000 needles (size 0000 on the cuffs!). This is not a beginner project.

I am particularly proud of the thumbs on these mittens and how they match up with the pattern on the palm. It took a little unusual shaping to get them just right, you’ll notice in the pattern the front of the thumb is two stitches wider than the back. It is not anything that effects the fit, but makes the look just right.

Download the Hearts and Dalas Mittens Pattern (includes chart) or just the Hearts and Dalas Mittens Chart (you may find this looks clearer than the one in the pattern).

Size: Approx 10 inches long (2 of that is cuff) and 7.5 inches around, woman’s medium. (Normally, I would do the hand length 7.5 inches, but with the very pointed top I did 8 inches for a better fit.)

Supplies:

  • Needles 0000 and 000 or size to get gauge
  • Lace weight yarn approx. 46g/407yds total. I used Knit Picks Gloss Lace in Bare Natural 28g/247yds, Fiesta 18g/124yds and Marina 4g/36yds
  • Stitch marker
  • Scrap lace weight yarn
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors

Gauge: 15 stitches and 17 rows per inch (stranded color work in the round on larger needles) It is important to get gauge to get the stated size.

Please do not reprint this pattern for distribution, repost it, post the pdfs for download, sell or teach it without my permission. As usual, no one has knit these mittens yet but me, so if you see any errors please let me know.

    • When I first looked at these, I was going to ask you to show the thumb side of the mittens. The pattern was so well matched, I didn’t even realize the left mitten was the thumb side. Well done you. Always amazed at your work. Another stunning entry. Best of luck.

    • Certainly not a beginner project! So impressive and I can’t believe you won’t win a ribbon. We’re all rooting for you.

    • Your mittens are stunning! I love dala horses myself, and think the colors you chose are just perfect. Not to mention 15 st per inch…gah! Very nice. Gushing done : D

      • Thank you. It took me about a month, but I was also knitting the Mitten Garland Advent Calendar at the same time, so I wasn’t putting all my time into these.

    • Have plenty of experience with lace weight but not with such small needles. Should I find some, I will certainly try to make these mittens. They are really beautiful.
