Getting Ready for the Fair

It’s creeping up on State Fair time here in Minnesota. Once again I will be entering a pair of mittens in the colorwork mitten category. The difference is this year I am not knitting like crazy up until the last minute. Knitting a pair of mittens every month this year has given me a selection of completed mittens to chose from. I am going with my Newgrange Mittens.

I think the design is elaborate enough, the gauge is small enough and the quality of the knitting is good enough to make these a contender.

You might remember two years ago I took second place with my Flying Pig Mittens. I was really proud of these, but knew there were a few mistakes, so I was happy to take second.

Then last year I entered my Retro Goldy Gopher Mittens. I thought I had a good chance with the Minnesota theme, but didn’t get any ribbons. The judges said it was because the thumb was too small and really they were right.

I do enjoy entering something in the Fair. It is not like there is much of a prize, I think first place gets $8, but it is fun to feel a part of it and I get such a kick seeing my mittens on display there. Have you or are you planning on entering anything in a state or county fair? How have you done? Wish me luck!

    • Good luck! I’m rooting for you!

We always enter stuff in the county fair. I judge at one of the local county fairs, so I’m ineligible to enter any fair in any of the categories I judge, so it’s always a struggle trying to decide what to enter. I judge everything I’m best at doing! This year, I entered baked goods and a collection; my son has a wide variety of art projects and a cake. The fair opens Wednesday, so we’re really anxious to see how we did.

      • I have never entered any of the food competitions, though I wanted my husband to enter his smoked salsa. Good luck. Let us know how you do.

    • I entered a photo but didn’t make it the 2nd round of judging. Oh well, I’ll try again next year. Best of luck to you. The mittens are beautiful!

      • From what I hear the photography is the hardest of all the judged events at the fair. With creative activities they display everything entered which is fun.

    • I’ve entered things in our county show in previous years, though this year I didn’t because I was away. It works a bit differently here – there are only a few handicraft categories and they change every year, so you can’t plan in advance. The classes are announced a few months before the show and then I decide what to enter. If you enter four classes you get a free ticket to the show, which is a very good deal, so I try to do that.

      • Oh, I wish we got free tickets to the fair for entering! They also don’t put out the book of categories until a few months before here as well. There are usually new themes and categories, but there are always the same basics.
