Project: Yarn Ends Mittens

If you have been following long at all, you know that I have been knitting a pair of mittens for the MN Knitters’ Guild Yarn Ends Challenge. The idea is to use up all those little scraps of leftover yarn. We were allowed to bring in a full ball of yarn as a base. This was perfect for me as I had lots of little balls of leftover Knit Picks Palette from my past mitten projects. I ended up using 2.6 – 3 grams each of eleven different colors. (Well technically, I used the Serrano twice because I have a little more it it.)

These mittens were a lot of fun to knit. The pattern isn’t mindless, but it also seemed to work up quickly. I was worried about how all the colors would work together and spent a little time thinking about placement so there was a good mix of darker and brighter colors. There is something about this pattern done up in different colors than makes me think of a cosy blanket.

You could knit this up using scraps like I did or do the whole design in just one contrasting color. I think it would be very pretty in a color transitioning yarn. I would stay away from something really variegated as I’m afraid you will lose the details of the pattern.

I have included charts and instructions for a couple different sizes in this pattern. The pictures show it knit up in the medium size which has a band of the MC between the front and back of the mitten. The small and large sizes will not have this band. I am the only person who has test knit this pattern and I’ve only done the medium size, so please let me know if you find any errors.

Sizes:
This pattern includes charts and instructions for a small size, 7.2” wide x 7.25” long, and a medium size, 7.6” wide x 7.6” long. Both sizes have a 2” long cuff. It is important to get gauge to get the stated size.
If you would like a bigger mitten knit the small size at a gauge of 9 stitches and 11 rows per inch. You will get a mitten that is about 8” wide and 8” long.

The length of any size mitten can be shortened by starting the decreases earlier. I start my decreases at the top of my baby finger.

Gauge: 10 stitches and 12 rows per inch (It is important to get gauge to get the stated size.)

Supplies:

  • 284yds/62g fingering weight yarn, 149yds/32g for MC and approx. 12yrds/2.6g each 8 other colors and 13yrd/3g each 3 other colors (these are the ones that will also be use on the thumb) or a total of 135yds/29.8g of contrasting colors. I used Knit Picks Palette in Black for my MC and then in order, Serrano, Semolina, Cyan, Green Tea Heather, Kumquat Heather, Rouge, Clover, Custard, Currant, Pool, and Serrano again. (Amounts are based on medium size)
  • Four size 1 double-pointed needles or size needed to get gauge
  • Four size 0 double-pointed needles or a size smaller than the needles you are using to get gauge.
  • Stitch marker
  • Scrap fingering yarn
  • Tapestry needle

    • They’re wonderful! I love the apecial details like the pretty little design on the cuff, and the matching of the bands on the thumb to those on the hand. Thank you for the instructions!
