This week for Iron Craft we are having a virtual baby shower for Jenny over at A Bird in Hand Art. From Jenny’s art I knew she liked birds and owls show up a lot in her work, so I chose that for my theme. I decided to put my new crochet skills to work and create an owl granny square to be used in a baby blanket. Designing a square with an owl in it turned out to be easier than I thought.
The square is a basic circle in a square with the ears stitched on afterwards giving it a little dimension. Hooking enough squares to make the full blanket during the Iron Craft time line, while traveling, was probably biting off more than I could chew. Here’s where I stand on the 80 squares I need to finish.
I went with a color palette that I though matched what Jenny often used on her owl pieces. I think they are bright and attractive for a baby of any sex. The owl are on the white squares with colored squares in between. It has been so much fun to work on this blanket I can’t wait to finish it and see it all together.

I crocheted my squares with a 4.25mm hook and used worsted weight yarn. The squares measure 4″.
Abbreviations:
- ch = chain
- dc = double crochet
- sl st – slip stitch
Round 1: Make a magic loop. Ch 2 (counts as first dc), 11 dc. Close the loop. Sl st in the top stitch of the first chain. End off.
Round 2: Attach new color into any dc. Ch 3 (counts as first dc). 1 dc into the same space. 2 dc into each remaining dc. You will have 24 dcs (12 sets of 2). Sl st into the top stitch of the first chain. End off.
Round 3: Attach new color: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc into the next two dcs. 2 dc, 2 ch, 2 dc into the next dc. *Dc into the next 5 dcs. 2 dc, 2 ch, 2 dc into the next dc. Repeat from the * two more times. Dc into the remaining two dcs. Sl st into the top stitch of the first chain.
Round 4: Attach new color: Ch 3 (counts as first dc). dc into the next 5 dcs. 2 dc, 3 ch, 2 dc into the ch 2 space. *Dc into the next 8 dcs. 2 dc, 3 ch, 2 dc into the ch 2 space. Repeat from the * two more times. Dc into the remaining 3 dcs. Sl st into the top stitch of the first chain. End off.
Make ears: Use the same color are round 2.
You are going to work on six stitched from Round 2 between two corners.
Ch 3 into first stitch.
Dc into the next stitch.
Sl st into the next 2 stitches. Dc into the next 2 stitches. Weave ends into the back of the square as shown in picture below.
Eyes and Beak:
With a tapestry needle and scrap yarn, stitch on a beak.
For the eyes, 3c in white. Sl st into the first chain making a loop. End off. Weave in end.
Using black yarn, make a french knot in the center of the eye.
Since the ends didn’t have much to weave into on the eyes I put a little fabric glue on the back to keep everything in place. Sew onto owl with white thread and needle.
(You could also sew on felt eyes if you don’t want to deal with such small crocheted circles.)
I’ll give you instructions for the full blanket once it’s done.
Update 3/7/13 Ok, I still haven’t finished my blanket, but you can see a lovely on a reader did here.

Bedankt voor het delen van het patroontje van deze owl-square!!
ik heb een link geplaatst naar dit bericht
I love the owl pattern, but at the end it says will give instructions to put blanket together, but there is none????
That is because embarrassingly enough I still haven’t made enough squares to put it together yet. You can use any crochet join to put the squares together to make a blanket though.
This is adorable and I would like to print this off which I did not think I was so inept that I can not firgure this out at this point….HELP…but thank you for sharing such a great idea
Sally – There are a couple different ways. The easiest is where is says download pdf of Owl Granny Square. Click on that and it will open a pdf of the pattern. You can print that or save it to your computer to print later.
Or you can copy the pattern and paste it into a word document and print that.
Or you can use the print option from your browser and just print the page, though that gives you a lot of extra stuff.
Or you can use a site like http://www.printfriendly.com/ where you enter the url and it gives you a printable PDF.
Very good tutorial Thank you ! My mother is very fond of owls , so I am sure to make something with this !!!

I recently made a blanket for my niece’s new baby using your owl pattern. It came out really beautiful.
Oh, do you have a picture you can share?
This is SO cute, I just HAD to stop on the laprobe I am doing to make a sample Owl square! I make nearly all my gifts, and everyone I know is having a BABY, except me; I am 72 with my youngest child age 12, and I do not need anymore babies – (9 is enough – age 12 – 53). So I think this will make some really GREAT BABY blankets!
I added 2 groups of 3, brown short stitches at the bottom for toes (a “V” w/ I st. in center for each foot) , because it seemed top heavy with the eyes/ears sticking out of the body circle up to the top of the first white row, and with the toes coming down to the same place as the “ears” on the first white row at the bottom balances it out.
I made the beak w/3 stitches (a “v” with one stitch in center) since I did not know, but I may have made them too long – yours is much shorter, and I will make them shorter, as it looks better.
I used a G hook, trying to make a larger Square and added an extra white row, but, that only made it 5 1/2 ” and I wanted a larger square. I will try making an extra row on the Owl body – I just need 1/2″ more, so I may try an extra row of 1/2 dbl. crochet between the dc. rows of the Owl body, that should make the Sq. 6 inches. 6, 9 and 12 inches are the common square sizes for group projects wanting “donated Squares”, so if I make one or two EXTRA squares each time I make a baby blanket, I will have a lot of squares for donated projects, and since they always put the best one in the CENTER, maybe KAT & SUSAN will get the center of attention (with credit, of course!!!) 🙂
I will send photos when I get a couple more sample squares made.
THANKS! Susan in Texas
Can’t wait to see!

My daughter loves owls and I am having fun with all of the great owl projects! I have been making my squares in fluorescent colors with a black background. It looks really wild! I’m making a lap blanked instead of a bedspread. She’s diabetic and is always cold (we’ve already started having fall temperatures and the quakies on the mountain have turned yellow! I am disabled and like to crochet while sorta watching TV. Every time I look up from whatever I am working on I have to go back and count stitches. I’ve left my email because I’m hoping you have some more cute owl projects up your sleeve. Thanks again for the pattern.
Thanks Deb. Glad you are enjoying the pattern!
I am somewhat of a beginner at crocheting, but I found your pattern very simple to understand. Thank you for that as it gets overwhelming at times. I’m currently a pregnant, stay-at-home momma with plenty of time on my hands to make our baby boy all kinds of things. I absolutely adore the owl theme! Thanks again!
I’m so glad since I’m a beginner at writing crochet patterns.
I would like to sell a finished product using this pattern design. If I add your name as the designer for the pattern, are you all right with this.
Was thinking of making something also for a donation for a gift to my audubon society chapter silent auction at our annual spring banquet
Chris,
I sent you an email regarding this.
I love this owl and my granddaughter And daughter in law also love owls.I’m going to make them with some beautiful neon yarn I just bought at hobby lobby. Thanks for the pattern.
I hope they love them!
I am trying to make this but can’t get the eyes or ears to look right got any ideas to help me I am new at this and it never looked right
Thank you for the pattern! I used it to create a blanket for a friend who is expecting her first baby, a boy. If I can figure out how to do it I will post a picture of the final project.
Oh, so glad you enjoyed the pattern!

Good morning Kat and Susan
I just came across your pattern for the owl granny square and it is really cute. we have a knitting and crocheting ministry at my church. If you would like to check it out the website is http://www.hopefortodayfellowship.com. We are putting together a tapestry of squares from the group to hang on the wall of the fellowship and I think your square will make a cute addition. I need a 5″ square so I will try to use a 5mm hook instead. Would you be able to send me the instructions for the full blanket. I would love to make it for my neice would is expecting in January.
Thank you so much and have a blessed day.
Wendy
