Project: Austria Mittens

I finished my Austria Mittens just in time for the end of NaKniMitMo2015!
Austria MittensI call these my Austria Mittens, because I bought the beautiful hand painted yarn (Wollgarnspinnerei Ferner Lace handgefärbt) at a small knitting store in Melk, Austria this past December. I was attracted to the pinks, reds and purples in it. My husband Matt suggested it would look great as colorwork in mittens and I think he was right. The design is based on traditional Austrian embroidery and textile designs.
IMG_4950A few notes on this pattern:

1. The hand painted yarn I used was actually lace weight not fingering. I used Knit Picks Palette which is fingering for the black yarn. I was still able to get the gauge I usually get when knitting with just Palette, though I did have to pay a little more attention to it. Some people say Palette is a thin fingering, so this may have helped too. In the pattern, I suggest you use two fingering yarns.

2. I have long fingers and often find the thumbs on mittens aren’t long enough for me so this pattern has a 3 inch thumb. If you find that is going to be too long for you, here is a chart for a 2.5 inch thumb.

Now I just need to figure out what to do with the remaining 400+ yards of this beautiful yarn.
