I love to knit and design mittens. You may ask why. Well, I live in Minnesota and it is cold a lot of the year here, so mittens are something I will wear. Mittens are a relatively quick, satisfying knit unlike say a sweater. You can get variety in your knitting by changing up thumbs, shapes of decreases and types of ribbing. Mittens are a great small project to test out stitch patterns and they are a fun little canvas for colorwork designs.
So, I’ve decided to give myself a mitten challenge for 2014. I am going to design (and hopefully knit) a pair of themed mittens for each month of the year. Of course, I’ll be sharing all the patterns here, so maybe you’ll knit a few pair along with me. Monday, I’ll be sharing January’s mittens.

What a great idea. I am doing some recurring projects this year as well.
I grew up in Wisconsin, the state next door. My mom made each of us a pair of new mittens every year — not as fancy as some, but nice and warm. When it got really cold we wore them one pair over another — nothing beats double mittens on a below-zero day!
My MIL does the same thing with the double mittens. As cold as it’s going to be here in the next week, I’ll probably have to do it too.
