I Knit Mittens

I love to knit and design mittens. You may ask why. Well, I live in Minnesota and it is cold a lot of the year here, so mittens are something I will wear. Mittens are a relatively quick, satisfying knit unlike say a sweater. You can get variety in your knitting by changing up thumbs, shapes of decreases and types of ribbing. Mittens are a great small project to test out stitch patterns and they are a fun little canvas for colorwork designs.

So, I’ve decided to give myself a mitten challenge for 2014. I am going to design (and hopefully knit) a pair of themed mittens for each month of the year. Of course, I’ll be sharing all the patterns here, so maybe you’ll knit a few pair along with me. Monday, I’ll be sharing January’s mittens.

    • I grew up in Wisconsin, the state next door. My mom made each of us a pair of new mittens every year — not as fancy as some, but nice and warm. When it got really cold we wore them one pair over another — nothing beats double mittens on a below-zero day!

      • My MIL does the same thing with the double mittens. As cold as it’s going to be here in the next week, I’ll probably have to do it too.
