Paper Cutting 101

After I made my paper cut map of Amsterdam for this year’s first Iron Craft challenge, I had a feeling I was going to get addicted to paper cutting.

Since then I’ve already made another one of Amsterdam and have started on Minneapolis.

But I was having issues with with pain in my index finger from doing so much cutting. So, I went to the person who inspired me to try paper cutting, Dr. Russ at NY Star Cards. Well lo and behold, he has started a series on getting started in paper cutting called Paper Cutting 101. In a series of posts he teaches you about supplies, negative vs positive space, transferring designs and the actual cutting. I followed his tip to buy an ergonomic knife and it has made all the difference.

I know a lot of people have expressed interest in trying one of these maps on their own and I highly recommend reading this series before diving in.

    • I am so honored that (1) I inspired you to do paper cutting (really?),(2) you would mention my blog, and (3) you found it useful. I am so glad that you got the new knife and that the pain in your finger/hand has subsided. Also, a rule that it upcoming (since you are doing more cutting)–for every 45 minutes of continuous cutting, I take a 15 minute break. It saves your back, hand and mind.

      Once again, thanks–DrRuss
