Iron Craft Challenge #14 – Denim Flower Art

It’s funny that I originally had a hard time coming up with a project for the Iron Craft Denim Challenge and then ended up making two projects. The first was an Armrest Project Bag inspired by Matt wanting me to keep my craft supplies more organized in the living room. The second was inspired by our newly redone master bathroom.
Master Bath
Ok, it’s actually been done since November of last year, but I’d yet to put any art up on the untiled walls. We chose a beautiful glass tile in this bathroom with various shades of blue that remind me a bit of fading denim. Making some artwork from the denim I had left over from the bag project just seems like a great idea.

I stuck with a design I’ve done in the past that I really like, lollypop flowers. Since I had some small white frames and unbleached muslin in my stash, I was able to make these two pieces with all things I had on hand. And look how good the finished pieces looks with the tile.

I didn’t take any step by step photos of this one because it’s just so simple.

I used a compass to draw various size circles on the wrong side of my denim. I consciously chose places in the denim that had faded to different colors. Then, I cut squares of muslin out that were about 1″ bigger around than the inside of my frame. On those pieces, I used two-sided iron-on adhesive to attach the denim circles to the muslin. Circles in white were embroidered for the centers of the flowers and simple lines of brown for the stems. I had wanted to do buttons for the centers, but I wanted to use the glass in the frames because these would be in a bathroom. Buttons wouldn’t have fit beneath the glass. Then it was just a matter of wrapping the finished piece around the backing of the frame and snapping it in. You can pull the sides of the muslin to help flatten it if it bubbles at all. Trim the muslin if too much is hanging over the edge and tape it down.

Voila, simple modern art and I used up some stash too!
