Advent Calendar Project ’14 – Week 4

(For the 24 weeks leading up to December 1st, we’ll be making a Christmas ornament, giving you enough to fill an advent calendar.)

It’s been a little crazy around here the last couple of weeks with traveling and visiting guests, so I needed a quick and easy ornament. This one certainly fits the bill.
Advent Calendar Project '14 - Week 4
A simple little Christmas tree made from birch tree discs and some tiny fake berries. This one comes together in less than a half an hour. I have to say, even though there isn’t much too it, I find this rustic little ornament very sweet.

A note about the birch tree discs: I had planned on cutting up a tree branch myself to use for this. The problem was that we have had so much rain, finding a good dry branch wouldn’t be easy. So instead, I picked up a bag of discs at Michael’s. You can also find lots of people selling them on Etsy.

Wooden Tree Ornament

Supplies:

  • eleven small wooden discs with the bark still on them (Mine were about 1/4″ deep and 1/2″ wide. You can use bigger or smaller.)
  • foil or wax paper (optional)
  • glue gun
  • hot glue
  • small fake berries (I cut mine from a floral pick.)
  • small eye screw
  • 6″ piece of ribbon

1. Lay out the shape of your tree. I tried to pick wood discs that were close in size. Of course they weren’t exact, so I put the smaller ones to the top and the bigger ones on the bottom. Ten of the discs will the the body of the tree and one will be the stem.

2. Use the hot glue to glue the discs together. I do this on a piece of foil or wax paper so the tree doesn’t get glues to my work surface.

3. Glue small sprigs (or single berries) on to decorate the tree.

(I also thought about adding a little white glitter as snow on my tree, but then decided to keep it a little more subtle.)

4. Screw the eye screw into the top of the tree. Put the ribbon through the eye and tie it for hanging.

    • Before I was read your post I was lamenting the fact that I don’t have time to do these great projects. Then when I saw it I realized that this is something I can do over the weekend at our trailer retreat. Thanks!

      • Oh easily! And I bet you can cut your own wood for it too. I’m thinking a snowflake shape from these would be nice too.

    • I’m all over this cute ornament. Question, you said each disc of wood was about 1/4″. So the bottom 4 discs that make up the widest part of the tree is just 1 inch?

      • Kathleen, it looks like I typed wrong. They were 1/4″ deep and 1/2″ wide. Of course, that is appropriate as none are the same or exact size. I fixed it above. You can use any size you want for a bigger or smaller tree.
